Case Studies

Case #1

Background

41 year-old male (initials: LS), Type 2 DM for 3 years, currently taking Metformin and Glipizide presented for treatment because disease not adequately controlled.  Patient’s HbA1c is 10.6.

Treatment Plan

Patient started on Afrezza,  4 units at dinner initially with no change in other medications.  Over the next six weeks, the patient’s Afrezza dosage was increased to include 8 units at every meal (3 x per day)

Current Status

After 6 weeks of treatment, patient’s HbA1c has dropped to 5.8% with no severe hypoglycemic events.  Patient reports feeling much better.  He is stabilized on treatment.


Case #2

Background

47 year-old male (initials: SP), Type 2 DM for 10 years, currently taking Trulicity, Farxiga, Edarbi and Metformin presented for treatment because disease not adequately controlled.  Patient’s HbA1c is 14.2.

Treatment Plan

Patient started on 4 units of Afrezza at dinner with no change in other medications.  Over next four weeks Afrezza dose increased to 8 units per meal with occasional follow-up doses of 4 units depending upon BG level. 

Current Status

After 4 weeks of treatment patient’s HbA1c has dropped to 6.6%.  Patient states that he feels great.  He had gone from drinking 8 bottles of water at night to only 1.  Patient was awaking 4 times per night to urinate and now sleeps through the night.  Prior to treatment with Afrezza patient reported blurred vision, sweatiness and leg pain. 


Case #3

Background

47 year-old female (initials: PA), Type 2 DM for 3 years, currently taking Metformin and Glipizide presented for treatment seeking better control.  Patient’s HbA1c: 7.3

Treatment Plan

Patient started on 4 units of Afrezza at dinner with no change in other medications.  Over next four weeks Afrezza dose increased to 8 units per meal. 

Current Status

In four weeks of treatment Patient’s HbA1c has dropped to 5.7% with no severe hypoglycemic events.  Patient is stable on therapy and states that she “feels fine.”
